Respiratory Rate

Respiratory rate, or breathing rate, is the number of breaths per minute while at rest. For most people, average breaths per minute while in a state of rest typically ranges from 12 to 20.

Resting respiration rate can indicate general cardiorespiratory fitness. Acute changes in resting respiratory rate can indicate poor rest and recovery or the onset of illness.

Respiratory rate is calculated via raw heart rate data by taking advantage of a phenomenon called Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia, a normal phenomenon in which heart rate increases during inspiration and decreases during expiration.
